KhubSurat India! The name reflects the glorious past of the country. But the future is uncertain owing to large scale exploitation of resources; depletion and degradation of the quality of essential resources like water. At this critical juncture and keeping in view of the current trends of economic development, we make a small effort to promote the health, wealth and happiness of our country through holistic improvement of environment and sanitation. We feel that there is an urgent need to change the human mindset with respect to environmental and social accountability and responsibility without which it may not be possible to sustain our environment and large population. Hence our endeavor is to care for our environment and share its valuable resources on equitable basis. We need to promote the utter simplicity of our Mahatma, the practical environmentalist; the saints and sages who lived in wilderness and enlightened the future generations. Why not we try to make a serious effort to integrate environment and development, we ponder. Unlike the culture and civilization of other countries which was born in cities, our culture and civilization was born in the wilderness of pristine forests. In the name of modernization and economic development (at any cost), we have lost our ancestral and cherished values, morals, ethics and principles. We (especially the rich and the affluent) have all comforts and luxuries but the question is, are we happier than our saints in jungles? Can we ignore the uniqueness and the distinctiveness of our country?KhubSurat India, is a voluntary organization promoted by people who are committed for environment. Sustainable environment and development is our moto. Meeting the basic needs of the needy is our goal. For us, KhubSurat is not one word. It is Khub + Surat. Surat the textile and diamond city of India had its worst history of plague. The city is so dynamic that it could not only recover from the trauma but also recovered its past glory. All this is possible due to the efforts of the government and the environmentally conscious citizens. Though Surat is one of the cleanest cities in India, its green cover is below the average for Gujarat. Its future is a cause for concern especially due to rapid urbanization, pollution of air and water. Surat is one of the places in Gujarat which gets fairly good amount of rainfall but yet the groundwater levels are falling alarmingly. India is on the threshold of water poverty and Surat is no exception. As a modest beginning, KhubSurat India initially plans to make voluntary efforts in the areas of urban water management; air quality and traffic management; urban forestry; and environmental education. We plan to channelize the resources and motivate and mobilize the nature lovers to make Surat a green city and an environmentally safe and sustainable city. When we win at home, we plan to extend to the country not to conquer but to serve sincerely and honestly.
KhubSurat feels that an organizational effort is much better and more stronger than the isolated individual efforts whose voice is neither heard nor cared for by the policy planners and developers. As an organization, it has a wealth of experienced experts behind to plan and execute though it is not a wealthy organization. KhubSurat welcomes all like minded people to join the efforts in strategic planning for the safety, health and happiness of future generations through preservation of environment and natural resources.
Agriculture, the base and basis for human survival has become unviable. It is a global tragedy. It caused rapid migrations from villages to city in search of livelihood, stressing the urban ecosystems further. The migrants have become a kind of environmental refugees in their own country. We need to plan and prepare to cater to the needs of rapid influx of people. KhubSurat is committed to console such deprived people and confront this challenges due to urban influx. This needs an integrated and sustainable planning and polices. Sectorial solutions as practiced today are not going to solve these problems. The world is rapidly changing mainly because of technological revolution. In a rapidly changing world, static planning needs to be replaced by strategic planning. Innovation and improvisation needs encouragement and support.
The aim of KhubSurat is to make Surat a model city; a safe, happy, sustainable, green and clean city where its wants are perfectly matched with its resources. The people behind the KhubSurat have been actively supporting such policies and activities over the period of two decades. Surat is the beginning and it is an experimental lab to test our capacities and abilities. Our aim is to beautify India. We want to replicate our successful experiments with appropriate modifications depending on the local needs, priorities, surroundings and circumstances. Sharing and caring is our approach.
